Xinyao (新谣音乐会) folk music classics
The Xinyao movements came about in the mid-1980s taking root from the Taiwanese folk genre. Originally popular amongst students, the young singers would plan and execute their own shows. Early popular groups include Shui cao san chong chang (水草三重唱; The Straws), Yu wei shi xiao zhu (鱼尾狮小组; The Merlion), and Di xia tie xiao zhu (地下铁小组; Underpass Group). Timeless Xinyao classics include ""A Step at a Time"" (一步一步来). The 1983 song ""Encounter"" (邂逅), was a duet by Eric Moo (巫启贤) and Huang Hui-zhen, which was the first xinyao song to make it to the Mandarin pop charts. Another popular performance in 2017 was byDr Ng King Kang, who has written songs for major artistis like Jacky Cheung and Andy Lau.
