What does 2017 baseball hold for the Swallows?
There are many reasons to be optimistic as a Swallows fan in 2017. Passionate manager Mitsuru Manaka enters his third full season at the helm and can really implement his style. Famous for combining Japanese talent with foreign influences, Wladimir Balentien is a talented Dutch outfielder with a knack for catching dropping balls from incredible heights.
The team clearly wanted to recruit American talent from the MLB with four new US-born players to go alongside relief pitcher Josh Lueke. David Buchanan, one of the four to arrive, has a reputation for keeping sides in contests with his control on the corners. Another, Ross Ohlendorf, should improve the team's consistency with sinking fastballs. The team has also acquired first baseman Dean Green and another pitcher in Preston Guilmet.
Mitsuru Manaka is certainly hoping this international experience will propell the team that he served so loyally as a player to the summit of Japanese Baseball. The side also boasts home-grown superstar Tetsuto Yamada whose capabilities saw him personally put together two fine seasons with the team in 2015 and 2016.
