Tokyo Games in summer 2021: Beach Volleyball—sand and serves
Outdoor sport beach volleyball has been a staple of the Games roster since Atlanta in 1996. Take a look at the range of Tokyo Games in summer 2021: Beach Volleyball tickets on offer at StubHub.
A staple of the Games since 1996
Beach volleyball first made it to the Games as a demonstration event at Barcelona in 1992 and four years later in Atlanta was accepted as a competition. A gold medal has since become the most coveted achievement in the sport, ahead of victory at both the International Volleyball Federation’s World Tour and World Championships. A total of twenty-four teams of two take part in each of the two competitions, with nations qualifying based on their form during the previous eighteen months of FIVB action. Brazil and the United States have undoubtedly been the most consistently successful nations since its introduction into the event, with the former winning at least a gold or silver in either the women’s or men’s games and the latter placing atop the podium on no fewer than six occasions. The defending champions from Rio in 2016 are Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt in the men’s event and Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst in the women’s. Action takes place at Shiokaze Park
The beach volleyball action will kick off with both the men’s and women’s preliminaries at a temporary venue built at Shiokaze Park on the 25th of July and conclude with the men’s final on the 8th of August. Alongside the host nation, two countries have already booked their place for the men’s tournament, with Italy and Latvia guaranteeing their spots via the FIVB Qualification Tournament. The latter will also be represented in the women’s game alongside Japan, Spain and World Championship winners Canada. The remaining twenty vacancies in each event will be decided by five different continental cup finals and the FIVB Beach Volleyball Rankings.
