The Kills - background to a talented duo
The Kills is a two-piece garage-indie-rock band formed of singer Alison “VV” Mosshart and guitarist Jamie “Hotel” Hince. Over fifteen years together the couple have forged a deep friendship becoming a duo that lives and breathes its music. It was while on tour with other groups that they met. Mosshart lived in the States and Hince in the UK but song ideas regularly flew across the Atlantic and as soon as Mosshart had the money she moved to the UK and The Kills was formed.
“Black Rooster" was released by Domino Records and followed by the debut album Keep On Your Mean Side in 2003. This album took an incredibly short two weeks to record. The Kills output isn't prolific, just five albums in a decade and a half with the latest, Ash & Ice, released in June 2016. Each album made a powerful statement with angst bristling alongside a cool and restrained sexuality. The duo's first four albums were cut at the Key Club Studio in Benton Harbor, Michigan while the latest was recorded in a rented house in LA. Guitarist Hince's long recovery from a broken finger led to Ash & Ice being three years in the making.
The Kills - a tour from indie to rock
Mosshart is known for the speed with which she writes her prolific output of songs. A sound, a conversation, a person inspire her and lyrics are quickly written. To kick-start, his creative process for work on Ash & Ice Hince took off on a 6,000-mile train journey on the Trans-Siberian Express. This journey led to “Siberian Nights” the first song on the album.
Despite the dark overtones of its music some of The Kill's tracks have ended up in film and on TV. “Wait” was referenced in the sci-fi film Children of Men (2006) while “The Sign of Three” appeared in the popular TV series Sherlock. The band's other three albums were Now Wow in 2005 followed by Midnight Boom shortly afterwards and Blood Pressures in 2011.
