Superbike manufacturers & main milestones
Founded in 1988, Superbike grew steadily. The contrast of some rather run of the mill race performances in MotoGP compared with some thrilling SBK races helped the popular championship to even greater success; bike enthusiasts ensured that the competition quickly achieved its elite status as the premier global event for production motorcycle racing. Also known as SBK, World Superbike, WSB or WSBK, the races are patronised by a familiar and exotic choice of bike manufacturers from Aprilia to Yamaha. Leading models such as BMW, Ducati and Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki figure on the list, with impressive engine capacities of up to 1,000 c.c.
Championship rules now require motorcycle manufacturers to produce at least 3,000 bikes of each type raced, instead of the previous minimum limits of 150 or 1,000 bikes just to meet the absolute minimum of homologation requirements. Nowadays, you are sure to see super-potent versions of real road bikes! Experience the excitement as their daredevil riders demand maximum performance and enthral the crowds of spectators with new racing records.
Riders from all over the world take part in the Superbike World Championship. Followings in Italy are particularly strong, probably due to the presence of Ducati. Similarly, devotee numbers are also high within the UK, where superbikes are the most popular type of motorcycle racing. Finally, riders from Australia and the United States have also enjoyed significant success.
