A wartime backdrop
The source material for On the Town was a 1944 ballet, Fancy Free, created by director and choreographer Jerome Robbins and composer Leonard Bernstein. They brought in the writing team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, who would later bestow their comedic gifts on stellar projects such as Singin' in the Rain and The Bandwagon. Whereas other Bernstein works like West Side Story or the soundtrack for On the Waterfront are known for their heady romanticism, the mood of On the Town is lightly humorous, an antidote to the anxiety that descended on the nation as it entered World War II. And it's these boisterous high spirits that have earned On the Town a special place in audience's hearts ever since.
On stage and screen
On the Town opened on Broadway in 1944 and ran for just over a year. Since then it has enjoyed regular Broadway revivals. The 1971 production by Ron Field received a Tony Award nomination for Bernadette Peters (Mozart in the Jungle), who plays the role of streetwise cab driver Hildy. John Rando's production at the Lyric Theatre in 2014 won acclaim for its dynamic new choreography by Joshua Bergasse; its cast included Megan Fairchild, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. The musical also inspired a 1949 film starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. Although regarded as a movie classic, this version takes liberties with the original, ditching all but a few of Bernstein's songs.
