New York Red Bulls History
Starting life in 1996 as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, the team have evolved many times during its short history. Widely expected to be the dominant force in a fledgling MLS, the MetroStars failed to live up to expectation. They still hold the record for the worst season in MLS history, finishing the 1999 campaign with a 7-25 record. This awful season was a low point for the club, but the beginning of their resurrection. In 2000, they signed German international Lothar Matthäus and in 2003 hired future United States manager, Bob Bradley.
These bold moves caught the attention of Red Bull who were in the process of establishing soccer teams around the world. In 2006, Red Bull officially completed the takeover of the MetroStars and changed the team's name to the New York Red Bulls. The team's fortunes on the pitch improved with an MLS Cup Final loss in 2008 and two Supporter's Shields in 2013 and 2015 along with a host of famous names passing through the ranks including Juan Pablo Angel, Thierry Henry, Jozy Altidore, and Bradley Wright-Phillips.
