Minor League Baseball - AA background
Minor League Baseball currently divides leagues into five major classes, the top two being Triple-A (AAA) and Double-A (AA). The modern Double-A classification started in 1946 and today there are thirty Double-A teams spread across three leagues, the Eastern League, the Southern League, and the Texas League. At this level, the majority of higher classification leagues like to mirror MLB and play a full season, however, only the Eastern League does this with the Southern League and the Texas League operating split seasons.
Double AA baseball is one of the most exciting baseball divisions as young players look to progress to the majors from this level. This division traditionally contains high numbers of top prospects as teams like to pit their best talent against each other at this level with Triple-A baseball normally the reserve of more experienced players. This all adds up to a competitive division with a large amount of top talent on display. Double AA baseball attracts passionate and committed supporters who always have an eye out for the next big star.
Minor League Baseball - AA highlights
Due to the regional nature of the three leagues and the geographic location of all the teams playing in Double AA baseball, there is a high level of local rivalry throughout the league. The prospect of local derbies and a variety of heated match-ups keep fans hungry for victory season after season. In the Eastern League, Harrisburg set the pace in the 90's with four back to back titles from 1996 to 1999. More recently, the Akron RubberDucks picked up their third title in eight years with their 2016 victory.
In the Southern League the Jacksonville Suns recorded back to back titles in 2009 and 2010, a feat the Mobile BayBears repeated in 2011 and 2012. More recently, the Jackson Generals took home the title after their 3–0 victory over the Mississippi Braves. In the Texan League, both the San Antonio Missions and Midland RockHounds look to dominate with the Missions picking up five titles since 2002. The RockHounds are pulling away with three consecutive title wins from 2014 to 2016.
