Kousuke Atari in Southeast Asia
Kousuke Atari and Chitose Hajime will perform together this summer 2018. Both from the Amami-Oshima islands in southern Japan, their music resonates with shima-uta (island music), the genre of folk music native to their hometowns. Young Atari looked up to Chitose Hajime as an inspiration as he developed his path in music. Both of these artists have had successful careers, receiving individual recognition multiple times at the Amami Folk Music Awards. When performing together, the duo, Atari and Hajime, refer to themselves as “Ochugen”. They released their first single together on March 9, 2010 called “Haru no Koujin”.
The many talents of Kousuke Atari
Despite starting his career in 1999 as a shima-uta folk singer, Kousuke Atari quickly rose to fame as a J-Pop artist in 2005 with his EP “Materia” and single “Sorezone Ni” in 2006, both of which still reflect his folk roots that got him started as a musician. Kousuke Atari was born on July 13, 1980 in Amami Oshima of the Kagoshima Prefecture, a small island in the Ryukyu chain of south Japan. His musical profession started as a self-trained high school student by singing a variation of shima-uta, the folk music style of his native island. Over the last decades Atari has made many adjustments to his singing style, topping indie charts all over Asia and the Yahoo Taiwan Charts, but has never lost sight of his roots. It doesn’t stop with music, Kousuke Atari has also excelled as a model and actor. In 2008 he posed as a model for an international Gap campaign and then went on to appear as an actor in TV series and movies like Taiwan’s Cape No. 7.
