In the Heights - a neighbourhood background
The lyrics and music for In the Heights were written by Lin-Manual Miranda of Hamilton fame accompanied by a stage book from Quiara Alegria Hudes. Miranda wrote an early version of the musical while still at university in 1999. After a university performance, he was approached and asked to write an expanded version, for possible Broadway production. Five drafts later, it was ready. The show is directed by Luke Sheppard with innovative choreography from Drew McOnie fresh from his success with Hairspray. In the Heights was staged in Connecticut in 2005 and off-Broadway in 2007 before, with little fanfare and fuss, it opened on Broadway in 2008. With its appeal quickly spreading by word of mouth In the Heights ran until 2011 before going on stateside and world tours. Its London West End premiere was at the King's Cross Theatre in October 2015.
In the Heights takes place over three intense days in the Dominican-American neighbourhood of Washington Heights. Despite being an inner city district a village atmosphere prevails where everybody knows everybody else's business and young love is budding in a community where change is afoot. To add to the charged atmosphere the action takes place in a New York Summer heatwave. Undertones of racial tension and the stresses of living with never quite enough money are played out to a backdrop of dance numbers and songs such as “Breathe” and “When the Sun Goes Down”.
In the Heights - dancing its way to awards
In the Heights is truly unique in the way it brings together salsa, soul, R&B, hip-hop and merengue to create a heady Latin groove. With an impressive thirteen Tony Award nominations, In the Heights danced away with prizes for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Choreography
