Gary Owen - from the military to comedy
Born in 1973 in Cincinnati Ohio, Gary Owen was always the class clown so it was no surprise that he ended up in comedy although life had a more serious start. After graduating from school he spent time as a young adult in the Navy where he was selected for the elite Presidential Honour Guard before becoming a military police officer at the Coronado Island base in San Diego. Rather than focusing on making arrests, however, he spent his time entertaining troops with his stand-up routines, earning an accolade as the "Funniest Serviceman in America".
After leaving the military Owen continued doing stand-up in San Diego, developing a huge popularity among the African-American population and going on to win Ebony magazine's "Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego" contest. This gained him a gig at Hollywood's Comedy Store in 1997 and two appearances on Black Entertainment Television's showcase Comic View. Owen went down so well his own one-hour Grandstand show followed along with an invitation to host Comic View, becoming the only white host ever. Other TV work included a headlining act on Martin Lawrence Presents: 1st Amendment Stand-up shown on Starz TV.
Gary Owen from the small screen to the big screen
2012 brought Gary Owen an ongoing role as Zac in Tyler Perry's successful sitcom House of Payne followed by the airing of his own comedy special on Showtime TV, I Agree with Myself. Gary Owen's comedy talents have transferred successfully to films with roles in Daddy Day Care alongside Eddie Murphy, College and Little Man. His most recent screen work was the box-office successes Think Like a Man and Think Like a Man Too and as Larry in Meet the Blacks.
Sticking to his big break roots Gary Owen has always worked at cultivating an African-American following with headline appearances on the cable channel BET with his own The Gary Owen Show and performances at events like Shaquille O'Neal's All-Star Comedy Jam tour. This role as a white man in the world of black comedy saw him named as "Black America's Favourite White Comic" in 2011.
