Beauty and the Beast - The History of the Show
The Beauty and the Beast movie was based on the book by Linda Woolverton, and was adapted into a cartoon in 1991 to huge critical acclaim. The process of converting it into a musical started in 1993, and it was also Disney's first venture into stage musicals. Susan Egan was cast as Belle in the first ever production, with Terrence Mann as the Beast. Mann had been nominated for a Tony thanks to his role as Javert in Les Misérables, and his performance as the Beast led to another nomination. Another notable Belle was Toni Braxton who played the role in 1998. The song "A Change in Me" was specially written and added to the show for her, and remains a much-loved feature of the musical to this day.
