Inspired by the same-named PBS TV show
Inspired by the same-named historic PBS TV show, Austin City Limits debuted on the festival circuit in 2002. Staged at Zilker Park, Texas, the inaugural two-day, five-stage event attracted 42,000 people, and by the mid-2000s it had expanded to three days, eight stages and an average attendance of 75,000. Muse, The Eagles, M.I.A., The Strokes, The Black Crowes, Massive Attack and The Flaming Lips were just some of the major performers who helped to increase Austin City Limits’ popularity in its first decade. And since 2013 the event has been staged across two weekends, with headliners including Foo Fighters, Florence and the Machine, Queens of the Stone Age, Kendrick Lamar, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The National, Arctic Monkeys and Paul McCartney. In 2015 organisers took the event to New Zealand for Auckland City Limits and three years later headed to Australia for Sydney City Limits. Must-see performers, must-eat food
In 2019 Austin City Limits proved that it still remains one of America’s must-see music festivals thanks to a line-up that included rock veterans Guns N’ Roses, acclaimed rapper/actor Childish Gambino, and folk darlings Mumford and Sons. Sponsored by the likes of Miller Lite, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and American Express, its eight stages also welcomed multiple Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves, Aussie psych-rockers Tame Impala, teen prodigy Billie Eilish, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, Latin sensation Rosalia, local favourite Megan Thee Stallion and post-punk legends The Cure. Alongside all the musical talent on offer, the festival has also become renowned for its food court, Austin Eats, which includes everything from turkey legs to funnel cakes, with local Austin joints such as Amy’s Ice Cream, Torchy’s Tacos and Stubbs B-B-Q particular favourites. Festivalgoers can also enjoy wandering around The ACL Art Market, which displays a wide range of artworks in the middle of Zilker Park.
